In Defense of Bling

Good news!

I'm not sure if you've heard, but according to the song "Price Tag" by British phenom Jessie J, it is no longer about the "money money money."

What a relief! It's been a really long time since the Black Eyed Peas asked where the love went, so I'm reassured to hear that finally somebody "just wants to make the world dance" again. No one's said it outright, but I think the tickets to this concert are free: the chorus to the song mentions the phrase "We're paying with love tonight," which is either a sexual proposition or a bargain, depending on how you look at it.

I'm glad that the pop universe is asking some long, hard questions about where the world's share of love went. Was it taken away by Keebler elves in the night and recycled into delicious wafers? Did it evaporate and condense itself into the most unlikely places, like this Soulja Boy song?

Wait, don't go. Those were both silly suggestions. We can all agree that B.o.B.'s brainchild, something of money being inversely proportional to love, is much better. From the song, it sounds like he wandered into a den of iniquity, the modern car lot, and had to turn away the many car salesmen thrusting good, but immoral, deals upon him. "All I need are keys and garage," he says zenly.

Me too. I can't wait for the concert on the 5th--it sounds like there will be a lot of hugs. It'll take me awhile to get there on my scooter, but isn't that the kind of thing we do for love?
